Candidates must have Firefighter 2 Certification and Washington State EMT-B and must be able to pass the Thurston County EMT Protocol Test. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT by Whatcom 4: Captain. The district, which serves Central Whatcom County, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Station Captain. Presently, there are 2 vacancies. Fire Captains are responsible for supervising station and firefighters. Currently, the shifts are assigned to a 4-12 schedule. Captains work four 12-hour shifts in four days, followed by four days off. This is a new position for the department as it transitions from a volunteer department to a combination department. POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT by Vashon Island Fire & Rescue: Fire Chief. $100,000 to $125,000 with excellent benefits. Located in the heart of Puget Sound, Vashon-Maury Island (pop. 11,000) is a patchwork of pastoral and natural settings. Miles of lightly traveled, pine edged country roads make bicycling and walking popular activities among residents and visitors alike. The island is approximately 13 miles long by 8 miles at the widest point, and covers 37 square miles. In the summer you can visit one of the many farms, rent a kayak, or explore Vashon's beaches. Visiting the historic Point Robinson Lighthouse for a beach walk will afford you with views of Mt. Rainier and Seattle. The community exhibits strong support for its excellent public schools, which are consistently ranked among the state's best. Vashon and Maury Island has its own park district, which administers a number of waterfront and inland parks, which afford a variety of activities ranging from hiking to beachcombing to equestrian trails. Vashon Island offers its own farmers market on Saturdays from May through mid October in the heart of the town. Plenty of shopping opportunities are available in unique stores year round.

Reporting directly to the five member Board of Commissioners, the Fire Chief manages the Fire District's operations and administration. The Fire Chief works closely with the Board in setting goals and objectives for the District. Once established, it will be the Chief's responsibility to see these goals implemented. The new Fire Chief will develop and manage the District's budget as approved by the Board of Commissioners. The new Fire Chief will supervise all District personnel either directly or through delegated authority. He or she is responsible for recruiting, training, and retaining qualified volunteer, career fire and aid personnel. The Chief will negotiate with the District's bargaining units and ensure that the District is adhering to contract requirements. If there is a major fire or emergency incident, the Chief is responsible for directing and assisting command, as well as ensuring a thorough investigation. In addition the Chief is expected to respond to alarms within 20 minutes.

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university or an associate of arts degree in fire science or fire administration is preferred; a master's degree in public administration or business administration is desired. The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of seven to ten years of experience in a comparable agency with extensive experience in a senior management role, such as fire chief, deputy fire chief, operations chief or battalion chief. Extensive experience in successfully building a "combination" department is very important. Competitive candidates will also have an ongoing record of training and professional development.
